Multiple Sclerosis :

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease which mainly affects the nerves of brain and spinal cord disrupting the ability to transfer signals. The specific cause for MS is unclear but the underlying factors may be disrupted immune system or failure of the myelin producing cells, genetics ,environmental factors like viral infections ( Epstein- barr virus) can trigger MS, smoking etc,.

As the multiple sclerosis can effect any part of the central nervous system , a person with MS can have almost any neurological symptom or sign related to CNS like fatigue, visual problems like blurred vision, double vision, muscle weakness , stiffness or spasms, coordination and balance issues, cognitive difficulties (memory , attention) , emotional changes (depression, anxiety) , bladder and bowel dysfunction, loss of sensation in the limbs ( tingling, pins and needles, numbness etc,.) , problems with speech , difficulty in swallowing etc,. It is difficult to diagnose in the early stages but can be diagnosed in later stages by imaging and lab testing. There is no specific cure for MS but can be managed with disease modifying therapies, interferons, steroids, pain management , physical and occupational therapy etc,.
