Mitral valve disease :
The mitral valve is present on the left side of the heart between the left atrium and left ventricle, and it supplies oxygenated blood to the different parts of the body. Any disease to this valve is considered to be a mitral valve disease. This disease can be present since birth or acquired at a later stage in life. There are three types of mitral valve diseases. They are mitral valve stenosis, where the mitral leaflets, which play an important role in regulating the blood flow, get stiff, making it harder for the blood to flow. The second type of disease is mitral valve prolapse, in which the leaflet becomes too stretchy. The third one is mitral valve regurgitation, where we find mitral valve leakage. Symptoms of a patient suffering from mitral valve disease include chest pain, dizziness, fainting, palpitations, shortness of breath, and swelling in ankles and feet. 2D echocardiogram, chest X-ray, and careful auscultation are some of the tools used to diagnose mitral valve disease. Treatment includes medical management and also surgical management, which includes mitral valve replacement and mitral valve repair.
