Mastoiditis :
Mastoiditis can be referred to as a bacterial infection that affects the part of the temporal bone that is present behind the ear. When there is an untreated middle ear infection, it can lead to mastoiditis. The two main types of mastoiditis are acute mastoiditis and chronic mastoiditis. The symptoms that occurred due to the mastoiditis can be ear drainage, swollen skin, ear pain that is throbbing, worsening hearing loss, confusion, fever, vertigo, headache, redness, double vision, and a soft feeling of bone behind the ear. The diagnosis of mastoiditis can be made with blood tests, ear culture, CT scan, and MRI scan. The treatment for mastoiditis can be with medications such as antibiotics and steroids. In case of drainage of infected fluid, myringotomy will be advised, in which a tiny hole will be made in the eardrum to drain the fluid. Small, hollow cylinders known as ear tubes will be placed in the hole for fluid drainage. In severe cases of mastoiditis, mastoidectomy will be advised to remove the infected bone.
