Mastoiditis :

Mastoiditis is a chronic infection of the mastoid bone, which is a part of the temporal bone of the skull behind the ears. Mastoiditis is primarily caused by untreated middle ear infection, as this infections spreads through the inner ear invading the mastoid bone. Although this condition can affect any one, it is more commonly seen in children often associated with symptoms such as ear discharge, fever, head ache, ear pain, hearing disturbances, redness, swelling and tenderness behind the ear.

A white blood cell count ,CT scan of the ear, MRI scan of the ear, and X-ray of the skull are some of the investigations performed by the medical experts to confirm the diagnosis and determine the extent of infection. Treatment of this condition is crucial involving hospitalization for long antibiotic therapy and surgery. If left untreated it can also lead to certain life threatening complications including facial paralysis, hearing loss, meningitis, sepsis, epidural abscess vertigo and hearing loss.
