Mastitis :

Mastitis as the name suggests is the inflammation of breast tissue and the breast may appear red, swollen , warm to touch(local rise of temperature), painful and mastitis can be associated with fever, chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weakness. Mastitis most often occurs in new mothers who are breast feeding due to cracked nipples, blocked milk ducts, weaning, poor breast feeding technique, over supply of milk and infrequent feeding and bacterial infection(staphylococcus or streptococcus) etc. Mastitis is diagnosed by physical examination, symptoms and ultrasound or mammography is necessary and the management includes antibiotics to treat the infection and other supportive care like warm compress, massaging if the breast, breast support ,rest and plenty of oral fluids.
