Liver Failure in Children :
Liver failure in children is characterized by the liver getting damaged and finally stopping functioning either completely or partially. It is divided into acute or chronic liver failure. Acute liver failure is known to appear suddenly without any sudden history of liver disorders. At the same time, chronic liver failure refers to a set of long term liver diseases that gradually worsen and damage the liver over a period of time. The factors causing liver failure are dependent on whether it is an acute or chronic condition and include viral infections such as Epstein-Barr (EBV), herpes (HSV) and hepatitis, metabolic disorders like biliary atresia and alpha-1 trypsin deficiency, autoimmune diseases, certain medications like erythromycin, valproic acid and acetaminophen and toxins like rat poison, insect killers, wild mushrooms and some cleaners or solvents and fatty liver. The common symptoms of liver failure in children are jaundice, nausea, vomiting and fatigue, enlarged liver and spleen, abdominal pain or swelling, easy bruising or bleeding and pale or gray stools.
