Leprosy

Leprosy also known as Hansen's disease is a medical condition which effects multiple organs(skin, nerves, mucous membranes) in the body caused by bacterium Mycobacterium leprae that often has a very long incubation period. It is seen in low socioeconomic conditions, poor immunity and unhealthy lifestyle. Most of the affected individuals donot show any symptoms as the bacteria has low pathogenicity but others show symptoms and signs ie,. hypopigmented lesions on the body, numbness, tingling in the hands and feet due to loss of sensation as it affects the nerves, muscle weakness, enlarged lymphnodes, dry eyes, blurriness etc. Diagnosis Is essential via physical examination,skin biopsy, slit-skin smear to identify the organism and treat it which includes antibiotics (multidrug therapy (MDT) over 8-12 months ) and othert supportive care
