Larynx Surgery :
Larynx surgery is also known as laryngectomy where complete larynx might be removed or only a part might be removed. Depending upon the disease the surgery shall be decided. Some of the factors where a ENT surgeon might consider are fracture to the larynx, malignancy of the larynx, injury to the larynx which might be a physical one or associated with some treatment like radiation therapy. Laryngectomy is done under general anaesthesia and some of the investigations which might be suggested prior to laryngectomy are basic blood investigations, Chest x ray and an cardiac fitness from a cardiologist. Post laryngectomy patient would be communication through voice prosthesis, electrolarynx, or non verbal communication. Risks associated with laryngectomy are infection, blood clots, shortness of breath, heavy bleeding. Patient would be advised to take bed rest for 2-3 weeks post surgery. If the patient is diagnosed as laryngeal cancer, then the patient would be advised radiation and chemo therapy. Life style modification and dietary advise would be suggested post operatively.
