Larynx Surgery :
Larynx surgery, also termed as laryngectomy, refers to a surgical procedure that is performed under general anesthesia for the removal of a part or all of the larynx. Larynx surgery is recommended to treat laryngeal cancer, chondronecrosis of the larynx, in which radiation therapy damages the larynx, severe larynx damage due to an injury or trauma, and laryngeal fracture. The patient should consult a speech therapist after the larynx surgery is completed to find new ways to communicate. Also, after larynx surgery, non verbal communication techniques like gestures, facial expressions, writing by hand, mouthing words, typing on a computer and sign language are used and techniques like esophageal speech and devices like electrolarynx and voice prosthesis are essential for effective communication. The drawbacks of larynx surgery are infection, heart conditions, blood clots, limited movement in neck and shoulders, breathing issues, damage to trachea or esophagus, decreased thyroid gland functioning, difficulty in speaking, eating, swallowing and fistulas.
