Hoarseness :
A person's voice is said to have hoarseness or a hoarse voice if his voice sounds rough, strained, breathy or raspy. Hoarseness, also called dysphonia, affects the voice pitch or how loud a person speaks. The significant signs of hoarseness are a voice sounding higher or lower than usual, a voice sounding as if the person is having a hard time talking, a raspy or breathy voice, softer than usual or speaking quietly. It is important to consult a doctor if a person has symptoms like pain while speaking or swallowing, blood in cough, having a hard time breathing or swallowing, when the voice is lost, or a lump in the neck. Hoarseness occurs due to various factors like laryngitis, yelling, cheering, after a long speech, chronic acid reflux, spasmodic dysphonia, vocal cord haemorrhage, muscle tension dysphonia, vocal nodules, cysts and polyps, stroke, vocal cord paralysis, parkinson's disease, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and cancers like laryngeal cancer, throat cancer and lung cancer.
