Hirsutism :
Hirsutism is a medical condition in which there is an unwanted male pattern hair growth in women particularly noticed on the face(chin, moustache area, neck, cheeks and over jaw bone), chest, back etc., due to an imbalance in androgen hormones. Hirsutism is usually a symptom of an underlying disease or certain conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), cushing's syndrome, insulin resistance, family history, certain medications ( anabolic steroids, testosterone), tumors or cysts on the ovaries or adrenal glands etc. It can also be idiopathic ie,. no underlying cause that can be identified. It usually presents as excessive hair(terminal thick hair not peach fuzz /fine hair) growth on the face, chest, back, buttocks, and thighs, male pattern baldness, acne, irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain etc. Diagnosis is made by physical examination, medical history, hormone level tests ( testosterone, DHEAS), imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan) to rule out tumors or cysts and blood tests. Management is by identifying the underlying cause and treating it and hair removal techniques like lasers etc. to treat the unwanted hair if it is causing mental distress in the woman.
