Heart murmurs / Cardiac Murmur :
Heart murmurs are whooshing sounds or swishing sounds that are heard through the stethoscope. Cardiac murmurs are heard when the blood flows abnormally over the heart valves. Depending on their timing, heart murmurs are classified into several types, such as systolic, diastolic and continuous. These cardiac murmurs are innocent and disappear without presenting any complaint, in some cases. Cardiac murmurs may also occur due to an underlying medical condition such as carcinoid syndrome, anemia, congenital heart defect, heart valve disease, endocarditis, hyperthyroidism and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The significant signs induced by heart murmurs include pain or tightness in the chest, bluish skin, heart palpitations, cough that doesn't go away, shortness of breath and syncope or weakness. The treatment options for heart murmurs include medications to manage the causative factor and to treat some serious health conditions and surgical options to replace or correct a valve.
