Sinuses are cavities in the face that are connected to the back of the nose. These sinuses can swell up or become filled with excess mucus, resulting in difficulty in breathing. Sometimes, unusual growths develop in the sinuses and make it hard to breathe. In such circumstances, doctors can operate on the sinuses without making large cuts using Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. It is usually performed when medication is not providing the patient any relief. The surgery involves the insertion of a nasal endoscope into the sinuses. A nasal endoscope is a thin tube with a camera and a light at the tip. This scope allows the doctor to see inside the sinuses. Tiny surgical instruments are also inserted into the sinuses, and the doctor removes growths, tissues or pieces of bone that are obstructing the sinuses. The procedure usually takes around two hours, and patients usually make a full recovery in a few weeks.
