Dust Allergy :
Dust allergy is an allergic reaction to an allergen called dust mites. The presenting complaints of dust allergy are itchy mouth, coughing, congestion, throat or nose, mucus that drips into the throat or postnasal drip, red, watery and itchy eyes, breathing difficulty with a gasping or whistling sound, sneezing, runny nose and worsening asthma symptoms like difficulty while breathing and chest tightening. To diagnose dust allergy, investigations like a blood (IgE) test and a skin prick (scratch) test are used. The treatment methods to manage dust allergy include antihistamine nasal sprays, oral antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, decongestants, allergy shots (immunotherapy), dust mite sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) and leukotriene modifiers. To prevent dust allergy, various measures have to be taken like reducing the exposure to dust mites by using allergy-proof bedding covers, reducing the humidity in the home, regularly washing the bedding, wiping down hard surfaces regularly and filtering the air in the home.
