Cushing Syndrome :
Cushings syndrome occurs in the body in case of long term exposure high amounts of cortisol (gluco corticoid). High levels of glucocorticoids may be due to internal increase in the hormone or external factors like medications. Internal causes include pitutary tumor (causing increased ACTH levels, tumor in adrenal glands producing excess cortisol. External intake of glucocorticoids for various other diseases like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, immunosupression after organ transplants. Symptoms of cushings syndrome include overall weight gain, weight gain in the trunk with thin arms and legs, moon face, buffalo hump (fatty lump between shoulders), acne, headache, pink/purple stretch marks on the stomach, hips, thighs, underarms, slow wound healing, hirsutism in women, irregular periods/stopped periods, lower sex drive and reduced fertility in men, stunted growth in children. Management includes identification and treatment of the cause. In case of external cause slowly taper off the medications that causes the symptoms. In case the tumor is identified ity has to be removed surgically and post operative care must be provided.
