Congenital heart disease in adults :
Adult congenital heart disease refers to heart defects that the baby is born with but continues to exist into adulthood and could not have been determined at birth. Examples include holes between the atrium of the heart, which are known as atrial septal defects, valve abnormalities like mitral valve replacement, and abnormal connections between heart blood vessels. Some adults appear with symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or arrhythmia, while others remain symptom-free. Diagnosis typically requires echocardiograms, MRI, chest X-ray, cardiac catheterization, and transesophageal echocardiogram. Treatment depends on the nature and severity of the defect and could be either via medication, catheter-based treatments, implantable heart devices, or, in some cases, even surgery might be advised. Regular follow-up should be maintained with a cardiologist throughout life in order to monitor and manage the condition if it worsens. Lifestyle plays an important role in patients suffering from congenital heart disease.
