Cervical incompetence :
Cervical incompetence also known as cervical insufficiency is a condition where the cervix of a lady becomes weak and starts dilating early in pregnancy that may cause more chances of miscarriage or preterm birth. In most cases it occurs painlessly and without contractions. It may be due to previous cervical surgery, trauma, or congenital abnormalities. Usually it is detected through ultrasound where there is early cervical dilation. Treatment would consist of extended bed rest or medication and in some cases even a surgical procedure called cervical cerclage, during which the cervix is stitched closed and prevented from opening up too early. In that case proper monitoring during pregnancy would go a long way toward managing such a condition and ensures a very good outcome.
