Carotid Stenosis :
Carotid stenosis, also known as carotid artery disease, is caused by the accumulation of plaque, causing blocks to the normal flow of blood in the artery. This condition is known to cause stroke eventually. The causative factors for carotid stenosis are smoking and using tobacco products, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes and age. Carotid stenosis may not present with any significant signs in the beginning, but may show symptoms as this progresses to a transient ischemic attack or stroke. The common symptoms induced by TIA or stroke include slurred speech or trouble forming words and communicating with others, loss of sensation one one side of body and loss of muscle strength, drooping of one side of face, losing vision in one eye with the experience of a dark shade coming from down over the field of vision, and having weakness on one side of the body. Carotid stenosis is best managed by a surgical procedure called carotid endarterectomy.
