Bow Legs :
Bow legs is a common condition that affects infants. The condition involves an unusual outward curving of the knees. The outward curving is visible when the child stands straight with the feet together. Most newborns naturally grow out of this condition by the time they turn 18 months old. However, some children require treatment for bow legs.
Children over the age of two may not recover from bow legs because of underlying conditions like rickets and dwarfism. Other underlying causes of bow legs include Blount's disease, lead poisoning and Donohoe dysplasia. A paediatric orthopaedician can diagnose bow legs with a physical exam and X-ray scan. The doctor may order other lab tests to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment of bow legs may involve vitamin D supplements or the use of splints or braces.
