Blood in the stools can be called rectal bleeding. Blood in the stools can be a symptom of many underlying disease conditions. There are some causes which leads to blood in stools such as anal fissure (tearing of anal lining), diverticulitis (small pouches in colon are inflamed), hemorrhoids (swollen veins present in the anus), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infectious colitis, sexually transmitted diseases, colon polyps (extra growths in colon), colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer disease, infections such as bacterial and parasitic infections which can lead to bleeding in the digestive tract. Blood in stools and the underlying disease can be diagnosed through tests such as anoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, digital rectal examination, proctoscopy, stool test, colonoscopy, endoscopy, and rectal culture swab. The treatment done to avoid blood in stools is mainly based on the cause. If it is hemorrhoids, it can be managed with medications; in severe cases, endoscopic procedures and surgery are advised.
