Atherosclerosis :
Atherosclerosis is described as a cardiovascular disease that involves the accumulation of plaque in the walls of arteries, leading to hardening of the arteries. Fat, cholesterol and other substances that limit the flow of blood are present in the plaque. The presenting complains of atherosclerosis include shortness of breath with light activity, leg cramps while walking, chest discomfort during exercise or emotional stress, pain in the back, shoulders, neck, arms and belly, heart palpitations, dizziness, bloating, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, frequent skin and soft tissue infections often in the legs or feet, elevated blood pressure, drooping on one side of face, changes urination frequency, headaches, vision loss in one eye and slurred speech. The factors responsible for atherosclerosis include triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, tobacco products and diabetes. The treatment options for atherosclerosis include medications and surgical procedures like atherectomy, angioplasty, carotid endarterectomy, coronary artery bypass grafting and vascular disease bypass.
