Ataxia :
Ataxia is a neurological disorder that presents a loss of coordination of voluntary muscle movements, causing the patient to move or act about or with clumsiness and unsteadiness. Its effects are on balance, posture, and speech. It makes very simple activities like walking or holding onto something comparatively hard to do. The form that the problem takes decides if ataxia is cerebellar or peripheral.
There are various causes of ataxia like genetic disorders , stroke, multiple sclerosis, tumors, alcoholism, and vitamin deficiency, among which deficiencies of vitamin E or B12.
Treatment for ataxia is mostly symptomatic, directed to the amelioration of quality of life, since an actual cure can hardly be offered for most cases. Physical therapy helps in keeping balance and coordination. Occupational therapy helps to aid patients in performing everyday tasks. In some cases, some symptoms are treated with medication, though this is less common. Healthcare workers also play a supportive role in the management of ataxia and in adaptive devices.
