ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) :
The upper chambers of the heart are called as atria. Generally, the atria are separated from each other by a thin wall called as the inter-atrial septum. This separation of the atria from each other prevents the mix up of blood between the two atria.
Simply put, an atrial septal defect or ASD, is the presence of a hole in the inter-atrial septum. ASD is a congenital heart defect (by birth). In ASD, some of the oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium flows in the wrong direction and enters the right atrium and gets mixed up with oxygen-poor blood. The bigger the hole, the more are the chances of developing heart and lung complications. Some of the symptoms of ASD in children include, delay in growth, being underweight, repeated chest infections, breathlessness, and fatigue with activity. Some of the symptoms of ASD in adults include, heart palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, and arm and leg swelling.
ASD can be closed through surgery. Talk to a doctor to know more.
