Ankylosing spondylitis :
Ankylosing spondylitis, also termed axial spondylarthritis, refers to a type of arthritis that usually affects the joints of the spine and sometimes the joints of the hips, shoulders, and knees, too. The presenting complaints of ankylosing spondylitis are lower back pain, pain in the butt region, neck pain, abdominal pain, stiffness in moving the hips, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, skin rashes, diarrhea and vision problems. This autoimmune disease mainly affects males who are younger than forty and those with a similar family history. The factors that are known to increase the risk of ankylosing spondylitis are crohn's disease, psoriasis and ulcerative colitis. The management of ankylosing spondylitis involves taking medications like over the counter NSAIDs (ibuprofen and naproxen), corticosteroids and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), regular physical activity and, through surgical intervention, rarely.
