Ankle Pain :
Ankle pain is described as discomfort in the ankle joint composed of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. The factors responsible for causing ankle pain include sports injuries, tendinitis, ankle sprains, bursitis, Achilles tendon injuries, ankle fractures, tarsal tunnel syndrome, sinus tarsi syndrome and sural nerve entrapment. Other medical conditions causing ankle pain are foot and ankle arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, flat feet, ankylosing spondylitis, high arch feet, and infection that forms or spreads in the ankles (osteomyelitis and cellulitis). The treatment modalities to manage ankle pain include anti-inflammatory medications like NSAIDs and corticosteroids, orthotics or footwear changes, physical therapy, immobilization, joint aspiration and ankle surgery. Resting and avoiding the activity that is causing ankle pain or injury, applying a cold compress, applying a compression bandage and elevating the ankle above the level of the heart as often as possible also help in relieving ankle pain.
