Anemia in pregnancy is described as a decrease in the red blood cell count in pregnant women. Hemoglobin is a pigment that carries oxygen throughout the body and is present in the red blood cells. Anemia in pregnancy is categorized into various types such as iron deficiency anemia, folate deficiency anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. This condition during pregnancy indicates that the levels of iron, vitamin B12 are folate are decreased during pregnancy. The factors responsible for causing anemia in pregnancy include blood donation, heavy menstrual flow, ulcers, blood disorders like thalassemia and sickle-cell anemia, and polyps. The symptoms of anemia in pregnancy include cold, dizziness or weakness, fatigue, dry or easily bruised skin, pale, sore tongue, headache, unintended movement in the lower leg, fast heartbeat and shortness of breath. To manage anemia during pregnancy, prenatal vitamins or iron supplements and blood transfusions for severe anemia are recommended.
