Acne is described as clogging of the skin pores, which is a common skin problem seen in many people. Acne is categorized into several types such as hormonal acne, cystic acne, fungal acne and nodular acne, based on the factors causing them. These acne appear mostly on face, forehead, chest, shoulder region and upper back, as these areas are regions with oil glands. The presenting complains of acne include pimples, papules, blackheads, whiteheads, large painful lumps under the skin (nodules) and painful fluid filled lumps under the skin (cysts). Acne are primary caused by sebum produced by sebaceous glands, bacteria and dead skin cells. Acne are triggered by various reasons like using greasy or oily personal care products, picking at the acne, wearing tight fitting clothing and headgear, stress, as a side effect of certain medications, high humid weather conditions and air pollution. Hormonal activity and consumption of certain foods high in sugar, skim milk and whey protein are also responsible for causing acne.
