Acid reflux refers to the backward flow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus and throat and is also termed Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The presenting complaints of acid reflux include back washing of acid, food, or liquids from the stomach into the throat, sour taste of acid, burning feeling in the chest, non-cardiac chest pain, sore throat, nausea and asthma symptoms such as coughing, chronic wheezing, and shortness of breath. These signs of acid reflux worsen after smoking or drinking alcohol and during nights after a large meal, after bending over and while lying down. The symptoms of acid reflux in babies include refusing to feed, excessive fussiness, difficulty in sleeping, hoarseness or wheezing, bad breath and small vomiting episodes. The treatment methods for acid reflux management involve prescribing medications like antacids, histamine receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors and alginates and surgical procedures such as the LINX device and Nissen fundoplication.
