An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor who is specialized in dealing with problems associated with the eyes. Ophthalmologists are eye specialists who take care of the eyes and vision. To qualify as an ophthalmologist, one has to attain an MBBS degree from a reputed medical college followed by pursuing post graduation, MS or MD in Ophthalmology. The common conditions treated by an ophthalmologist are astigmatism, corneal detachment, cataract, diplopia, dry eye, low vision, glaucoma, diabetes related retinopathy, strabismus, myopia and hyperopia, pink eye or conjunctivitis, serious eye injuries, presbyopia and other age related eye problems. Ophthalmologist evaluates eye conditions by doing eye exams, providing vision services by prescribing glasses and contacts, prescribing eye drops, diagnosing and treating diseases and vision issues that other health conditions cause and performing eye surgeries. One should consult an ophthalmologist if they are suffering from symptoms such as eye pain, blurry vision, double vision, red eye and light sensitivity.
