Urethritis :
Urethritis is the inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the urinary bladder to the urinary meatus outside. It can be caused by bacterial infections like gonorrhea (sexually transmitted disease), chlamydia, klebsiella,virus like herpes and irritants like spermicides, soaps and chemicals etc.,Signs and symptoms include pain and burning sensation during urination, discharge from urethra ( thick pus in gonoccocal infection), frequent urge to urinate, discomfort in the penis, pain in the pelvic region,abdomen etc. Diagnosis is by urine analysis, urine culture, urethral swab, STI testing etc. Management involves treating the underlying cause which includes antibiotics, antivirals, pain management and lifestyle modifications like practising safe sex and avoiding irritants to prevent further complications like spread of the disease to bladder or kidneys if left untreated.
