Candidiasis :
Candidiasis is caused by fungus called Candida albicans. Candida is present in the human body at all times but in minimal amounts. It is usually found in the mouth and digestive system. When there is a compromise in the immune system due to severe infections or long term antibiotics use, this invasive fungus overgrows.
When there is excessive overgrowth of candida in the mouth, it is called oral candidiasis or thrush. This results in the formation of white patches in the mouth. There is also genital candidiasis that leads to mucus discharge and irritation of the genital skin in both men and women. Candidasis is treated with anti fungal prescription medication given as oral tablets or creams that are to be applied topically.
