Trigeminal neuralgia :
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disease that affects the nerves in the face, leading to facial pain. The major cause of trigeminal neuralgia includes compression of the trigeminal nerve because of a blood vessel which is present near the brain stem. There are three major types of trigeminal neuralgia, which include idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, primary trigeminal neuralgia, and secondary trigeminal neuralgia. The symptoms which will be observed in trigeminal neuralgia will be throbbing pain, burning sensation, numbness, and dull pain. There are two forms of pain, like paroxysmal trigeminal neuralgia and trigeminal neuralgia with continuous pain. The trigeminal neuralgia will be detected through physical examination, an MRI scan of the brain, and a neurological examination. The facial pain will be either due to trigeminal neuralgia or other conditions like cluster headaches, migraines, or TMJ dysfunction. The treatment advised for trigeminal neuralgia will be through medications. Surgical management will be for trigeminal neuralgia through procedures such as microvascular decompression, radiosurgery, rhizotomy, and peripheral neurectomy.
