Tricuspid valve disease :
The tricuspid valve is an essential part of the heart. Its function is to control the blood flow between the chambers on the right side of the heart. Tricuspid valve disease is a condition in which this valve stops functioning correctly. This disease can be present since birth or it may develop in adulthood. Tricuspid valve disease that develops in adulthood can be of two types: stenosis and regurgitation.
Tricuspid valve stenosis is a condition in which the valve becomes stiff or narrow, which reduces the blood flow. In contrast, tricuspid valve regurgitation involves an inability of the valve to close fully. Since the valve doesn't fully close, it causes blood to flow backwards in the heart.Symptoms of tricuspid valve stenosis are shortness of breath, tiredness, abnormal heart rhythm and swelling in the lower limbs. The diagnosis of this condition involves tests such as EKG, heart MRI and chest X-ray. The treatment may involve medications or surgery.
