Splenectomy
Splenectomy is the surgical removal of spleen which is usually performed to treat the underlying medical condition. Spleen is an important organ located in the abdomen that helps in immunity as it helps to destroy bacteria , old RBC(red blood cells). Splenectomy is done in case of ruptured spleen, cancers like leukemia , lymphoma, infections like abscess, trauma/ injury, tumors, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, splenomegaly, wandering spleen, platelet destruction due to ITP, during surgical resection of pancreatic cancer. Emergency spenectomy is advised after a trauma or splenic rupture. As the spleen is involved in immunity, removal of it might lead to a risk of post splenectomy infection, sepsis which is a medical emergency and a rapidly fatal disease. Much of the spleen's protective role can be maintained in subtotal splenectomy where small of of spleen is left unresected in the abdomen.
