Sigmoidoscopy :
Sigmoidoscopy refers to a diagnostic test that helps in visualising the sigmoid colon (lower part of the large intestine or colon). Sigmoidoscopy is indicated for patients who present complaints such as diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, polyps, itching around the anus, low iron levels, low blood counts and bleeding or mucus in the stool. A thin, flexible tube called a sigmoidoscope, with a tiny light and a camera at the end, is used to view the inside of the colon. This procedure is recommended to treat conditions such as polyps, tumours, ulcers (sores), inflammation (redness and swelling), haemorrhoids, diverticula (pouches on the colon wall) and strictures (narrowing of the lower colon). The potential complications of sigmoidoscopy include continued bleeding after biopsy, inflammation of the lining of the stomach (peritonitis) and a perforation in the intestinal wall. The patient should consult a doctor if they experience symptoms such as fever or chills, bleeding from the rectum that lasts longer than a day, stomach pain or swelling and the inability to pass gas.
