Pterygium :
Pterygium is an eye condition that can affect the conjunctiva of the eye (the white part of the eye) by the formation of extra growth over the conjunctiva. This extra growth will be seen as pinkish or whitish growth on the conjunctiva. Pterygium will mainly affect surfers and people who spend time outside without the use of proper eye protection. The pterygium will be caused due to many reasons, such as exposure to UV light for a longer duration, people over the age of 60 years, irritation due to dry and hot climatic conditions, genetics, human papilloma virus, and vitamin A deficiency. The symptoms that are observed in pterygium will be swelling, redness in the eye, dry eye, burning of the eyes, watering of the eyes, inflammation, pain in the eye, and itching of the eyes. The diagnosis of pterygium will be done through diagnostic tests like regular eye examination and slit lamp examination. The treatment advised for pterygium will be surgical treatment, such as conjunctival autograft or amniotic tissue graft.
