Ovarian cyst :

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops on the ovary, which can be benign or malignant. Although majory of the cysts are harmless they might break or cause twisting of the ovary that causes severe pain, vomiting , headaches etc. It can be caused due to various factors like hormonal imbalance, ovulation (follicular cysts or corpus luteum cysts), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, family history, genetic predisposition etc,. Signs and symptoms pelvic pain or discomfort, lower backpain, lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, painful intercourse, bowel or urinary symptoms, abdominal swelling or bloating, weight changes.

Diagnosis can be made with detailed medical history and physical examination, ultrasound (transvaginal or abdominal), MRI or CT scan , laparoscopy (diagnostic), biopsy (removing a tissue sample). Management includes mostly conservative management watchful waiting (monitoring), medications (hormonal or pain management), surgical procedures (laparoscopy to remove the cyst if the symptoms are profound and causing infertility in some cases), cyst aspiration (draining the cyst) etc.
