Optic Neuropathy :
Optic Neuropathy is a condition in which inflammation of optic nerve leading to optic nerve damage. Optic nerve contains the fibre that carry visual signals from retina to the brain. Although the most common remains inflammation they are few other causes also that results in optic neuropathy. They are compression of the optic nerve from tumors, swellings, etc, intoxication with alcohol, tobacco smoking and certain drugs, few genetic disorders and nutritional deficiencies like vitamin B12 can cause optic neuropathy.
Signs and symptoms of optic neuropathy depends on the extent of damage in the optic nerve fibre and may include blurring of vision, loss of colour perception, pain while moving eye ball, blind spots, sudden or gradual loss of vision. It can be diagnosed by performing a thorough eye examinations including clinical and imaging tests. Early diagnose and treatment is necessary to prevent blinding. Treatment include treating underlying cause, steroids or surgery in severe cases.
