Optic Neuritis :
Optic neuritis is a condition in which there is inflammation of the optic nerve which is located in the eye causing various symptoms like blurred vision , sudden loss of vision (partial or complete), pain on the movement of the affected eye, loss of colour vision, loss of depth perception, sensitivity to light, redness or swelling of the eye, blind spots etc,. It can occur due to various factors like MS (multiple sclerosis), ischemic optic retinopathy due to thrombosis or embolism of the vessel supplying the nerve, vitamin B12 deficiency, beri beri, lupus, neurosarcoidosis, autoimmune disorders, meningitis, encephalitis, herpes, shingles, lyme's disease, trauma/injury, toxins and chemicals (methanol poisoning) etc,.
It can be diagnosed with opthalmoscopy, visual acuity and feild testing , MRI , CT etc,. Most patients see full recovery although some might have lasting effects . The main mode of treatment being identifying the cause and treating it that includes high dose steroids that helps in reducing the inflammation, pain management, NSAID's, and other supportive care.
