Newborn Jaundice :
Newborn jaundice is called neonatal jaundice, in which there are high levels of bilirubin in blood. Bilirubin is a yellow substance formed by the breakdown of red blood cells in the body. The symptoms of newborn jaundice are yellowish skin and eyes. There are different types of jaundice, such as breast milk jaundice, breastfeeding jaundice, and physiological jaundice. Newborn jaundice is diagnosed through physical examination, blood tests, and skin tests. When the jaundice is mild, it can resolve on its own. In case of severe and moderate conditions, there are treatment options to treat the disease, such as light therapy, frequent feeding or supplemental feeding, intravenous immunoglobulin, and exchange transfusion of blood. Newborn jaundice is mostly not harmful and if the bilirubin levels are very high, it can lead to damage of the brain, so immediate medical attention is recommended when there is jaundice in newborn babies.
