Muscular Dystrophy :
Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited condition which causes progressive degeneration of the skeletal muscles. Due to this degenerative changes in the muscle it lead to weakness and results in difficulty performing daily activities. This mainly occurs due to genetic mutations in the protein that helps in formation of muscle tissue. Signs and symptoms include loss of muscle mass, progressive weakness, muscle cramps, early fatigue, difficulty in walking and performing regular activities.
Muscular dystrophy can be diagnosed by clinical examination, electromyography, genetic evaluation and muscle biopsy. There no definitive treatment methods to cure muscular dystrophy. But as the disease is a slow and progressive condition it can be managed with physiotherapy and medications such as cortico steroids. In advanced cases where degenerative changes have set and effects the daily activities usage of assistive devices such as braces or wheel chairs is recommended.
