Missed Periods :

Missed period or amenorrhea is absence of menstrual period in a reproductive age female. It can be due to various factors and can be -normal causes like pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) and other pathological causes. It can be due to hormonal imbalances i.e,. thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism), hyperprolactinemia, functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), menopause, birth control pills/oral contraceptive pills (OC pills), stress, weight changes (low body weight, extreme exercise (very low body fat that causes hormone imbalances), anti-psychotic drugs, medical conditions like pitutary tumors, premature ovarian failure, any mechanism that disrupts hypothalamic-pitutary-ovarian axis etc.

A pregnancy test is a common first step for diagnosis followed by levels of prolactin, FSH (follicular stimulating hormone), LH (leutinizing hormone) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). Hysteroscopy or progesterone withdrawal bleeding test can be done to evaluate Asherman syndrome. Treatment and management of missed period includes identifying the cause and treating it.
