Leukemia :
It is a form of cancer that attacks the blood, bone, and marrow. An uncontrolled rise of abnormal white blood cells. The process makes the body fail to act on infections because of the similarity between the healthy red blood cells and white blood cells and therefore this body does not counter infections easily and also fails to produce red blood cells and even form platelets. In reality, there exist two large categories of leukemia acute versus chronic types of lymphocytic (ALL, CLL) and myeloid (AML, CML) leukemia though they actually differ in terms of the affected white blood cell type and rate of disease progression. Risk factors for leukemia include genetic predisposition, radiation or chemicals that are toxic by nature, some viruses that cause infections, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Some of the symptoms are like tiredness, frequent infections, bruise or bleed easily, bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, and unexpected loss of weight. Diagnosis is done through blood tests and through bone marrow biopsy.
The treatment for leukemia differs with the type of subtype and stages of this blood disorder. Some therapies used are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.
Many investigations have shown early diagnosis and early treatment improves the probability of patient remission.
