Lap Splenectomy :
Laparoscopic splenectomy is a surgical procedure in which the spleen is removed from the abdominal cavity via laparoscopy and is often done as an elective procedure. Although spleen has an important role in immune function by destroying encapsulated bacteria and fighting against infections it is essential to remove the spleen in conditions like trauma (blunt injury to abdomen causing spleenic rupture), blood disorders like sickle cell anemia , thalassemia, lymphomas etc,. Laparoscopic splenectomy is conducted when the spleen is not too enlarged and not an emergency by a general surgeon or surgical gastroenterologist under general anesthesia . It is essential to watch for overwhelming post splenectomy infection after the surgery.
