Ear Wax :
Ear wax or cerumen is a wax-like fluid produced by tiny glands in the ear. Ear wax protects the structures located deep inside the ear and is released to keep the ears hydrated. The other functions of ear wax include safeguarding the eardrum by keeping dust, germs and dirt that cause infections away from it. As new ear wax is produced by the ears, old earwax is naturally shed. Ear wax is categorised into two types: dry ear wax and wet earwax. Dry ear wax is dry and flaky in consistency and is grey or tan in colour. Wet earwax is a common type of earwax and is soft and sticky in nature. The constituents of earwax are sebum made up of various substances such as keratin, squalene, cholesterol, long-chain fatty acids, alcohol, chemical compounds and wax chemical compounds. One should consult an ENT doctor if the ear wax turns green, black or red in colour.
