Deafness :
Deafness is described as the complete loss of hearing in an individual. Some people are born deaf, and a few become deaf due to some acquired conditions at a later stage of life. Deafness presents as only hearing noises in the ears, like ringing, hissing, and buzzing sounds. People who are deaf find it difficult to understand a conversation, to respond to a person when spoken to, and have unclear speech, and may not react to loud noises. Deafness is caused by factors such as abnormal growth of the tiniest bones in the middle ear, damage to the cochlear nerve in the inner ear, exposure to loud noise, medical conditions, certain medications, problems with the auditory nerve, and neurological conditions. The risk of becoming deaf is high in those who work in noisy environments and who have been exposed to loud machinery and tools. An ENT specialist deals with deafness by recommending hearing aids and cochlear implants.
