D and C :
D and C refers to dilation and curettage and is a minor surgery that is performed to remove the tissue from the female's uterus. Dilatation is defined as opening the cervix, and curettage refers to scraping the uterine wall, followed by removing the tissue. D and C is recommended after childbirth, if any of the parts of placenta are left in the uterus or after abortion or a miscarriage, to remove tissues from the uterus. This procedure helps to evaluate and manage irregular uterine bleeding. D and C is indicated to remove any abnormal tissue in the uterus, that may cause problems like infection, polyps, cysts, uterine cancer or fibroids. D and C is usually conducted as an out patient procedure and lasts for around ten minutes. If one of the surgical instruments passes through the uterine wall during the procedure, there are chances for complications like uterine perforation, infection or bleeding to occur.
