Corneal Ulcer :
Corneal Ulcer medically known as keratitis is an eye condition where the epithelial layer over the cornea gets disrupted. It is a serious condition which may also result in permanent blindness. Most common causes of corneal ulcer is vitamin A deficiency, chronic dryness of cornea infections such as virus, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Signs and symptoms include extreme pain and redness in the eye, increased sensitivity to the light, watering of eyes, blurring of vision, squinting, sensation of gritty matter in the eye, swelling over the eye lids, yellowish grey discharge from the eyes, small pupil, headaches, drooping of eye lid. Diagnosis can be done by a slit lamp examination of eye where ulcer can be seen in the cornea, a fluorescein stain is used to visualize the margins of the ulcer. Treatment include anti biotic or anti fungal eye drops, oral steroid medication and surgery may be indicated if desired cure is not obtained by medication.
