Colitis in Adults :
The colon is the part of the large intestine that converts digested food into faecal matter. When the colon becomes irritated and swells up, it is known as colitis. It can cause symptoms like painful stools, diarrhea, and blood in the stools. Colitis is of many types and may develop due to many reasons. For instance, an infection due to food poisoning can cause colitis. This type of colitis can be treated with relative ease. However, colitis may also develop due to inflammatory bowel diseases. These are chronic and cause colitis that is difficult to treat. Doctors usually require blood tests, stool tests, and imaging tests to diagnose colitis. Acute colitis is typically treated with medication and changes in the diet. On the other hand, treating chronic colitis may require surgery.
