Claudication Pain :
Pain in the limbs during activity due to a lack of oxygen in the limbs is called claudication. It is a symptom that usually indicates peripheral artery disease, in which the arteries in the limbs become narrow. Besides pain, individuals may also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in their limbs. Claudication can also be a symptom of hardened arteries (atherosclerosis). The risk of developing claudication increases with age. Other risk factors include tobacco use, kidney problems, diabetes, high BP, and high cholesterol. Doctors can diagnose this problem by examining the body for signs of poor circulation. The doctor may check the pulse in your legs and feet. Tests such as ultrasound, ankle-brachial index, and angiography may also be required for diagnosis. In mild cases, a doctor may not prescribe any medication and may suggest lifestyle changes. However, if the pain is severe, the doctor may prescribe medicines or suggest surgery.
