Cholecystitis :
Cholecystitis means inflammation of the gallbladder. Cholecystitis is classified into several types such as acute, chronic, calculous and acalculous. The presenting complaints of cholecystitis are upper abdominal pain, abdominal distension, fever, nausea and vomiting, weakness, abdominal muscle stiffness and fatigue. The primary factors that cause cholecystitis are gallstones, biliary stricture, biliary dyskinesia, bile stasis and cancer. To diagnose cholecystitis, various diagnostic tests such as complete blood count, endoscopic ultrasound, liver function tests, abdominal ultrasound, HIDA scan and CT scan are conducted. Cholecystitis is treated using various options like intravenous fluids, IV antibiotics and IV pain relief and surgical procedures to remove the gall bladder. If left untreated, cholecystitis may cause complications such as injury to the bile ducts, liver and pancreas, impaired digestion and absorption of nutrients, swelling leading to necrosis and gangrenous cholecystitis, abscess or septicemia, chronic inflammation leading to impaired functionality and gallbladder fibrosis and peritonitis.
