Cholangio carcinoma Surg :

Cholangiocarcinoma surgery is the surgical procedure performed to treat the cholangiocarcinoma , which affects the bile duct. It is considered as one of the most challenging surgical approach due to the location and sensitive nature of bile ducts.

For intrahepatic bile duct tumors or cancers, the partial hepatectomy is opted which involves in removal of affected tumor with most of the liver tissue surrounding the cancer, along with a portion of normal liver tissue. The remnant liver tissue carries out all the functions of the organ.

For extrahepatic bile duct tumors, a specialized and highly complicated procedure called as Whipple's procedure is performed which involves in the removal of affected tumor area of bile duct, with portion of stomach, a part of small intestine and right head portion of pancreas. It is called as pancreatoduodenectomy. It can be managed with chemotherapy and radiation therapy post operatively.
